Something is rotten in the state of Denmark

To live or not to live?

That is THE question for the Danish government.

12 Lundbeck patients have already been killed in the US, 8 more Lundbeck patients are scheduled to be executed for the sole month of June 2011.

Act Now!

If you are a Danish citizen, why don’t you SEND A MESSAGE to Mr. Bertel Haarder, Minister of Interior and Health, in Copenhagen, to ask:

  • How can a European pharmaceutical company be allowed to participate in the death trade with impunity?
  • How much longer is the Danish government going to tolerate such a violation of European and ethical standards?
  • How is the Danish government going to handle its presidency of the European Union in 2012 with regards to the death penalty?

If you are not a Danish citizen, why don’t you send a message to the Danish Consular representative in your country to submit the same questions? You can find the relevant contact information per country HERE.

Be civil and courteous, insults and angry messages would be counterproductive and damaging.

About The Pentobarbital Experiment

"Lundbeck is a global pharmaceutical company engaged in the research and development, production, marketing and sale of drugs for treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders." As the sole supplier of Pentobarbital to US departments of corrections, Danish company Lundbeck took an active and dedicated part in the executions of human beings. This is a clear violation of its ethical obligations as a European pharmaceutical laboratory. Its manufacturing plant for Pentobarbital is based in Kansas, USA. Here is the full story: the facts and the numbers brought to you by European activists dedicated to the universal abolition of the death penalty. Disclaimer: This blog was created to raise awareness and to encourage legitimate citizen actions to bring an end to the torturous executions in the USA. It does not, and never did advocate violence or retaliation against whoever participates in the legal lynchings of human beings. View all posts by The Pentobarbital Experiment

    Dear Mr. Bertel Haarder,

I am an American Zen Buddhist priest and have worked in prison ministry for twenty years. Some of my work has revolved around the needs of death row prisoners here in the US. I have been an eyewitness to two executions by lethal injection over the years.

The experience of watching two of my students executed in front of me has forever changed my life and brought about tremendous stress and even physical damage to me personally. Watching a group of men bring a frightened human being, who has been held in the appalling conditions of an American death row, into a small room outfitted as a “medical” setting to be deliberately put to death is unlike anything in the realm of ordinary human experience. It is macabre and grotesque beyond imagination.

Since the Danish Lundbeck corporation is the sole supplier of Pentobarbital to US Departments of corrections, the Lundbeck corporation is actively taking part in the “medicalized” murder of human beings. As the stocks and availability of the older sodium thiopental drug decrease more execution states will be switching to Lundbeck’s pentobarbital.

When Lundbeck pentobarbital is used in medicalized murder, a Danish company becomes an active partner in the deliberate killing of human beings in the same way as the Degussa company became enmeshed in the murder of human beings in Nazi Germany.

As a Buddhist priest, as a caring human being, I implore you to adhere to recognized European ethical standards and force Lundbeck by law to cease and desist from participation in the death trade by taking very proactive measures to prevent Lundbeck pentobarbital from being used for the elimination of human life.

    In dynamic peace,

    Ven. Kobutsu Malone

    Dear Mr. Bertel Haarder,

Europe is the only region of our world nowadays in which the death penalty is not being executed. All members of the Council of Europe have abolished it as an EU member is not permitted to have the death penalty. Denmark is an important member of the Council of Europe and pioneers the field of the protection of the human rights.

The determination of abolishing the death penalty by the Council of Europe is reflected in its protocol no 6 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms that was followed by the protocol of the abolishment of the death penalty in peacetimes by the Parliamentary Assembly in April 1983. In 2002, another important step was taken through protocol no 13, which confirms the abolishment of the death penalty by all means, even for crimes committed in wars.

The Council of Europe demands the abolishment of the death penalty as a prerogative of its membership. Since 1997 no human beings have been executed by member states of the Council of Europe.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe pays further attention to the death penalty by supervising those countries that have got an observer status in Europe, notably Japan and the United States of America.

That is why I want to draw your special attention to the drug pentobarbital that is sold by the Danish enterprise Lundbeck and that is used for executions of women and men in some states of the USA.

I feel free to provide some information about it for you, and want to draw your attention to the statement of Amnesty International that was published some time ago:

EU Should Ban Trade Of Death Penalty Drugs To US

Last October, Arizona executed Jeffrey Landrigan using sodium thiopental imported from England. Other states also acquired this drug from the UK – but many of them (but not Arizona) have since had their supply confiscated by the DEA.

One of those states is Georgia which, in seeking to execute Troy Davis, is now scrambling to find an alternative drug. Last Friday it appeared that they were close to a decision to replace sodium thiopental with pentobarbital.

This latter is rapidly becoming the drug of choice for US nation’s executioners, as Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi have all switched to it.

The company that makes the drug these four states are using, Lundbeck, is also based in Europe (Denmark), although the drug itself may be manufactured in the US.

13 men had been executed with Lundbeck drug up to now. More people are scheduled to be executed with Lundbeck drug in the near future, among them innocent men!

The EU is supposed to have a ban on the trade in “tools of torture”, but a loophole allowed these exports of lethal injection drugs from the UK last fall, and this loophole clearly needs to be closed.

That is why Amnesty International is promoting a petition to José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, to ban the use of EU sourced drugs for US executions.

While these drugs should be banished from US execution chambers, Amnesty is not calling for an end to the manufacture or exporting of drugs which have legitimate and important medical uses; simply for the EU to insist that these drugs don’t end up being used for the opposite of their intended purpose – for killing instead of healing.

Meanwhile pentobarbital is being used for the execution of human beings by 5 American states. There are also innocent people among the persons executed, as it is proven.

Dear Minister, Ladies and Gentlemen of the government of Denmark, I ask you to pay special attention to this problem as Lundbeck company does not feel up to doing something against it by an end-user clause thus preventing that pentobarbital can be used for the executions of human beings.

Concerning the legal issue of this matter I feel free to draw your attention to the statement of Reprieve, a UK-based human rights organization. (http://www.reprieve.org.uk/static/downloads/2011_03_29_PUB_Lundbeck_legal_briefing_for_shareholders_.pdf).

With regards to the ethical principles for responsible sale of Pentobarbital I ask Denmark to make the Lundbeck company respect the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and to prevent the USA from using pentobarbital for executions.

The excuses of Lundbeck Company not being able to accomplish the principles of responsible business activity cannot be tolerated deedless any longer. It is unacceptable that more women and men are being executed with pentobarbital.

It is also unacceptable that the principles of the human rights of the Council of Europe are being undermined further.

Europe loses its credibility in demanding the worldwide abolishment of the death penalty if it accepts the sale of pentobarbital for the execution of human beings in the USA without consequences. It must not be accepted that Lundbeck company makes a mock of the people in Europe any longer! It is necessary to put the brakes on death profiteer Lundbeck!

Dear Minister, please make sure that the European politics of human rights for the worldwide abolishment of the death penalty will not be undermined by Lundbeck Company. Lundbeck has to take its hat off to the principles of Europe!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Heinz Leitner

Please, Help us here. The only thing politicians here understand is money and power. If Europe would boycott some big industry like Coca Cola, it could make a big statement. Please do not sell pentobarbitol to prisons.
