Lundbeck’s Ugly Business Exposed!

Medical experts state that Lundbeck‘s Pentobarbital is obsolete while alternatives are readily available.

Meanwhile, Lundbeck pays American medical experts to continue its ugly business in the US, blatantly disregarding its involvement in the death trade and dismissing all proposed options to steer clear from executions.

DR News on Monday revealed that two US doctors, both paid by Lundbeck, have recommended that Lundbeck’s Pentobarbital should not be withdrawn from the US market.

Lundbeck’s CEO, Ulf Wiinberg, admits to DR News that two US experts, Professor Lawrence J. Hirsch of Columbia Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and Michael D. Frost MD from Minnesota Epilepsy Group, both received money from the drug company. But the CEO denies that it has affected them in their decision to recommend that Lundbeck’s Pentobarbital must remain on the US market:

“Believing that those two doctors had to come out and say that they would like to see our drug on the market because they have received a fee, is far-fetched, I think”

says Ulf Wiinberg to DR News.

“This is obviously about dollars and cents for Lundbeck, and it is Lundbeck’s decision to measure how much dollars and cents weigh against the ethical scrapes, and this case gives them this opportunity”

says Steffen Thirstrup, head of the Institute for Rational Pharmacotherapy and, as of June 1, 2011, new Head of Licensing Division of the Danish Medicines Agency.

A number of Danish experts said to DR News that Lundbeck’s drug, Pentobarbital, is no longer used in Denmark and several other countries.

“It’s probably been 10 years since I last used Pentobarbital. The drug was replaced many years ago by new products that are more effective and have fewer side effects”

says Bjarke Rogvi-Hansen, a consultant in neurology at Rigshospitalet – Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark’s leading hospital for patients needing highly specialized treatment. He is surprised that Lundbeck – backed by two US experts – warns that the removal of its drug would have consequences for US epileptics:

“The argument I do not understand is that we have alternatives which are more suitable and which can also be used in the US”

says Bjarke Rogvi-Hansen.

Meanwhile, Lundbeck’s CEO Ulf Wiinberg believes:

…”If you’re a professor at Yale, you do not sell your idea for a small fee”.

Obviously, the fee must have been appealing enough to recommend Lundbeck’s pentobarbital not be withdrawn from the US market.

Lundbeck’s ugly business is exposed on all fronts and on both sides of the Atlantic.

About The Pentobarbital Experiment

"Lundbeck is a global pharmaceutical company engaged in the research and development, production, marketing and sale of drugs for treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders." As the sole supplier of Pentobarbital to US departments of corrections, Danish company Lundbeck took an active and dedicated part in the executions of human beings. This is a clear violation of its ethical obligations as a European pharmaceutical laboratory. Its manufacturing plant for Pentobarbital is based in Kansas, USA. Here is the full story: the facts and the numbers brought to you by European activists dedicated to the universal abolition of the death penalty. Disclaimer: This blog was created to raise awareness and to encourage legitimate citizen actions to bring an end to the torturous executions in the USA. It does not, and never did advocate violence or retaliation against whoever participates in the legal lynchings of human beings. View all posts by The Pentobarbital Experiment
